Photographer: Paul Benham Cramond Island lies off the picturesque and historic village of Cramond, the site of the earliest recorded settlement in Scotland. Several millennia later the site was occupied by a Roman fort, evidence of which can still be seen today. Despite this important early history, most of the village's surviving architecture dates from the eighteenth century onwards, although there are notable exceptions including the Bishop's Tower and Cramond Kirk. The island can be reached via a raised walkway when the tide is out. Just make sure you keep an eye on the time or you may find yourself stuck there for longer than you planned. Tide times are posted on the shore, and are also available from the tourist office. More information on Cramond |
